- RedHat has discontinued the incorporation of the native ‘Docker engine’ in their repositories and has replaced it with their own ‘PodMan’. Although RedHat claims PodMan is equivalent to Docker, even in syntax, it does not run as a service and also does not interact with IPTABLES as Docker did.
- RedHat 8 & CentOS 8. Redhat 8 has been out for nearly a year and is now in WTW VMware templates for use. CentOS 8 may not be viable. Years ago RedHat took over the CentOS project and has architected it’s distribution repos in such a way that it cannot be managed by Satellite. ATIX has been able to fix the CentOS repositories and manage it with their version of Satellite (aka Orcharhino). At present ATIX is working on CentOS8, but does not have a date or timeline when this will be available.
- Docker Engine / Kubernetes Roadmap News –
- Docker Engine is not incorporated in RedHat 8. RedHat now comes with Podman, which can run docker images, however is different in many ways and does not run as a service.
- RedHat acquired CoreOS, which is built to run containers with Docker Engine, however that has been rolled under the OpenShift product line.
- The public version of CoreOS is now targeted to go EOL on May 26, 2020.
- Docker Community Edition (aka Docker CE) runs on CentOS7 and Ubuntu 16,18,+.
- Docker has a few offerings which align with RHEL7/8; “Docker Engine Enterprise” and “Docker Enterprise. An overlay of ‘Docker Engine Enterprise” on top of RHEL8, seems to be the closest aligned option. Docker also has “Docker Kubernetes” as well, which overlays “Docker Enterprise”.
- Mirantis acquired Docker in November 2019. Mirantis already has it’s own Kubernetes technology, so will be interesting how this moves forward.
- VMware acquired Pivotal PKS in December 2019.
